Helderberg Chess Club Shines at Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Showcase in Cape Town
Helderberg Chess Club proudly played a direct supporting role in one of the most prestigious chess exhibitions ever hosted in Cape Town, as the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam showcase unfolded at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) ahead of the global finals near Hermanus.

World number one Magnus Carlsen headlined the event alongside elite grandmasters Levon Aronian, Vincent Keymer, Parham Maghsoodloo and former World Championship challenger Peter Leko, with world-famous streamers Anna Cramling and Dina Belenkaya adding to the global spotlight.

Helderberg on the Board, in the Crowd and Behind the Camera
Helderberg Chess Club was represented across every level of the event — on the boards, in the audience, and behind the scenes:
- Ten Helderberg Chess Club tournament sets were supplied for the event and used in the simultaneous exhibitions.
- Naomi Bolton, representing Helderberg Chess Club, served as the official on-site photographer and media coordinator, capturing content from a historic day for South African chess.

- Two Helderberg juniors proudly represented the club across the boards:
- Isabella Temmers and Albert van der Spuy

- Many Helderberg players and families attended as spectators and competitors in the Open Blitz event, soaking up the atmosphere and competing alongside players from across the city.
The mood throughout the day was electric — players, parents and supporters were visibly star-struck, inspired by the chance to watch and interact with legends of the game at close range. By all accounts, everyone had an unforgettable time.

A Historic Result for a Helderberg Junior
One of the standout local performances of the day came from Albert van der Spuy, who achieved an exceptional draw against the visiting grandmasters.
Albert reached a winning position during his game but made the mature and composed decision to accept a draw rather than risk the position — a remarkable display of both chess skill and competitive judgment on the world stage.
This result places Albert among only a handful of South African players to score against the elite Grand Slam field.

From Local Club to Global Stage
The Freestyle Chess (Chess960) format challenged players to rely on creativity and calculation rather than memorised openings, and Helderberg’s young representatives showed that local development can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with global excellence.

Helderberg Chess Club is proud to have contributed equipment, talent, spectators and media coverage to an event that showcased South Africa’s ability to host world-class chess.

Club Pride and Growing Momentum
From junior participation and Open Blitz competition to logistical support and professional media coverage, Helderberg Chess Club once again demonstrated that community clubs are the backbone of elite chess development.

We congratulate Isabella Temmers and Albert van der Spuy on representing Helderberg with distinction and thank Naomi Bolton for her tireless work ensuring this historic moment was professionally documented for South African chess.
