Helderberg Chess Club Shines at the Cape Open

Helderberg Chess Club members delivered an impressive set of performances at the Cape Open Chess Championships held from 13–15 June, with players competing across multiple age groups and sections. The club returned home with several podium finishes, section winners, rating gains, and strong performances from both experienced competitors and rising young talents.

In the Open sections, Adolf Feraydo achieved an outstanding result by finishing as the Under-16 Open Runner-Up with 5 points from 6 games.



Dawid Kruger also competed strongly in the Under-16 Open, securing 8th place with 4/6.

In the Advanced Section, Albert continued his steady progress, scoring 3½/6 and finishing in 11th place. His performance earned him an impressive gain of 41.2 FIDE rating points.

Tyrique represented the club in the Intermediate Section, scoring 3⅓/6 and finishing 22nd out of a competitive field of 66 players.

The club’s youngest competitors also made their mark. In the Under-8 section, Freyja Griesel scored 3/6, finishing 6th overall and earning the title of Best Girl in her category.

Ami Beukes, who recently celebrated her sixth birthday, bravely competed against older and more experienced opponents, finishing 15th in the Under-8 Girls section with 1/6.

The Under-10 players produced several strong performances. Cullen Beukes finished in an excellent 7th place with 4½/6, while Emma Koen scored 4/6 to finish 13th. Lana de Bruyn followed closely with 3½/6 and 16th place. Cayden Poole scored 3/6 to finish 20th, while Trinity Isaacs also scored 3/6. Elbe Klopper completed the section with 2½/6.

Helderberg’s Under-12 players were particularly successful. Michael Venter claimed first place in the section with an outstanding score of 5½/6. Alexander Marais added another top result, finishing 6th with 4½/6. Gustav Koen scored 4/6, while Jason Griesel finished on 2½/6.

The Under-14 section produced another championship performance for the club. Liam Rule dominated the field to take first place with 5½/6, while Ben Klopper secured the runner-up position with 5/6. Migael Kruger also featured among the leading players, finishing 6th with 4½/6.

These results highlight the growing strength and depth of Helderberg Chess Club, from its youngest newcomers to its experienced tournament players. The club congratulates all participants on their efforts, sportsmanship, and achievements throughout the weekend and looks forward to building on this success in future tournaments.
