District East Trials 2026: Helderberg Talent on Full Display

The District East Individual Trials took place on 7–8 February 2026 at Altena Primary School, bringing together schools from across the Helderberg basin and the broader Metro East region. Each school was limited in the number of players they could enter — yet the playing hall was still packed with approximately 420 young chess players battling it out over the board.

The scale of the event was impressive. Coordinating hundreds of players, parents, arbiters and coaches is no small task, and we highly commend the Metro East EXCO for running a tight, efficient tournament. The rounds moved smoothly, results were processed swiftly, and the overall atmosphere remained focused and competitive throughout the weekend.

These trials carried high stakes. The top players in each section earned their place in the Metro Schools Individuals Closed Trials, which will take place on 7–8 March 2026 at Hottentots Holland High School. Qualification is no guarantee — it must be earned over the board — and we are proud of the Helderberg Chess Club players who rose to the occasion.

With such a strong showing across nearly every age group, Helderberg Chess Club continues to demonstrate the depth of talent developing in our region. Now the focus shifts to March, where the Metro Closed Trials will determine who advances further along the provincial pathway.

The boards reset. The pieces go back to their starting squares. But the standard has been set — and Helderberg is very much in the fight. ♟️
