Triggerfish Tuesday – Rain, Rockstars & Tactical Distractions
This past Tuesday, the weather tried its best to cancel chess.
Rain. Wind. General “stay at home” energy.
And it worked… on almost everyone.
Except Charlie.
Rain or storm, Charlie will always play chess, preferably outside.
When we arrived, Aleks was already there, eager to absorb some of Sven’s legendary wisdom. Unfortunately for him (and possibly for everyone else), Sven decided to skip this one.
Which meant Alyssa became the chosen one.
To her credit, she didn’t just survive — she fought. Their game stretched on for over an hour, a proper battle of focus, stamina, and probably a bit of stubbornness.
Meanwhile, outside… Charlie had plans.
He lured Naomi out into the rain (as one does), where he had a surprise waiting:
An actual rockstar casually sitting there playing guitar.
Enter Johan Verdoes from the band Blitz — fresh off winning Battle of the Bands — just vibing solo like it’s completely normal to run into live music mid-chess night.
Naomi is now firmly convinced that Charlie hired him as a tactical distraction to finally beat her for the first time in Triggerfish history.
And honestly…
it worked.
Between the music, the atmosphere, and some conveniently timed blunders, Charlie secured the win. Naomi insists this result comes with an asterisk.
To be fair — Johan is ridiculously good. Even Charlie, who knows his music, reckons this guy has big things ahead.
Naomi’s position on the board?
Not so much.
When Alyssa eventually came outside, Johan was deep into some very convincing Nirvana covers — so convincing that she briefly believed she’d stumbled into a time warp.
Within minutes she was:
- Asking for an autograph
- Taking a fan photo
- Fully committing to the moment
Johan, slightly stunned but clearly flattered, signed his first-ever autograph.
Remember that moment.
One day, it might be worth something.
