Triggerfish Tuesday: Happy Hour Carnage & Fresh Blood

With all the recent chess activity, it seems Gerrit’s wife gently but firmly decided he needed to rejoin society – and we were the lucky beneficiaries of that executive decision.

Dennis arrived early. Very early. Early enough to responsibly evaluate the happy hour situation and be there before six. Beer: secured. Alibi: established. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask), the beverage did not bring calm. It activated something primal. Dennis proceeded to dismantle opponent after opponent with unsettling efficiency and launched himself to the top of the leaderboard like a man on a mission.

Philip showed up ready for battle, and Naomi immediately decided that pairing him with Gerrit would be excellent entertainment. The two locked into heavyweight clashes for most of the evening… dramatic positions, sharp tactics, long thinks, and enough tension to attract a small crowd pretending they “just happened to be walking by.”

Clive and Reggie locked into intense battles as well – with Clive the clear victor this time. We welcomed Rohan, whom we met at the Triggerfish bughouse market event. Former SA Champs qualifier back in his school days — and it shows. The moment Sven sensed a rated pulse in the room, he practically teleported to the board. The game didn’t fully go Rohan’s way, but he held firm for a long time before one late slip turned the tide. Very solid showing. We’re hoping he’s back soon. Otherwise we may need to reconsider our onboarding strategy of “Release Sven.”

Then three more newcomers arrived, two brothers and their friend. Confident. Capable. Clearly unaware of the emotional rollercoaster they had just signed up for. Naomi and Alyssa each took on one of them… and both took respectable losses. No excuses. Just strong play.

At some point, Charlie casually decided that indoor chess was limiting his creative expression and relocated Alexis outside for a patio showdown. Because apparently weather is just a suggestion. Unfortunately for Alexis, fresh air did not improve the position. Alyssa, fueled by loyalty and mild indignation, stepped in to restore balance to the universe. After that, the teenagers collectively decided that chess was temporarily overrated and wandered off to explore the environment like free-range grandmasters.

Tian joined again and had some strong battles against Dennis — proper, gritty games. Before heading out, he and Naomi had a long strategy discussion about coaching, middle-game focus, and how to bridge that awkward phase between “great opening” and “why is everything suddenly on fire?” The foundations are solid. The transition is under renovation. Progress is very visible.

By the end of the night, we had 14 players. Strong turnout. Strong games. Strong energy. If this momentum keeps building, senior league season isn’t just looking promising — it’s looking dangerous.
