Helderberg Chess Club Shines in Cape Town Club League Rounds 9 & 10
The Cape Town Club League served up a double-header this week, and Helderberg Chess Club’s A and B teams delivered in style—both squads remain at the top of their respective sections as the season heats up.
Round 9 Recap
Helderberg A Team faced UCT B and set the tone early with a sharp win from Shaun, taking a 1–0 lead. The team stayed composed through a tense finish to clinch a 3½–2½ victory, keeping their unbeaten streak alive.
Helderberg B Team squared off against African Chess Lounge B in a gritty back-and-forth. Ben and Etienne dropped tough games to the Somai brothers, but Eli and Clive leveled the score at 2–2. Despite the fight, the B side fell just short, losing 3½–2½ in a nail-biter.
Round 10 Results
The quick turnaround brought a fierce response:
A Team vs Stellenbosch B: Pure dominance. Helderberg stormed to a flawless 6–0 sweep, with Daniël and Martin polishing off the perfect team performance.
B Team vs 2 Knights: Hungry to bounce back, the B side controlled the match from start to finish, cruising to a 4–2 victory.
League Standings
HCC A Team: Still leading the C-section, proving their consistency week after week.
HCC B Team: Despite the Round 9 slip, they remain firmly on top of the D-section standings.
