Triggerfish Tuesday #1 – Cider, Excuses & a Trapped Queen

Our very first Triggerfish Tuesday came with more plot twists than a Sicilian Defense.

Tian was off in Joburg doing who-knows-what (probably pretending not to miss us), and Clive claimed he couldn’t come because he’d had champagne — apparently, that doesn’t mix with beer or chess. 🥂 Even Naomi had an excuse: she chose Magic over chess again, insisting she had a “birthday draft” planned for weeks. Uh-huh. We suspect she just wanted one last dramatic farewell to The Warren.

Daniel’s student/social life seems to have reached GM-level multitasking, but his chess time keeps shrinking. We don’t get it, but we forgive him… for now.

Naomi did at least show up early to unpack the pieces (and, purely for research purposes, sampled the delicious cider on tap 🍏). The tables were neatly reserved for Helderberg Chess Club, with plenty of room for more players — and one curious bystander even stopped to ask what was going on. Fingers crossed he returns, brave enough to face our crowd next week.

Dennis made a strong comeback and took on Alyssa in some intense games — he won the first, but in the second she was a piece up before her mom summoned her away (to, you guessed it, go play Magic). The curse continues.

Naomi squeezed in a quick game with Alex and gleefully trapped his queen — immediately declaring that a perfect moment to leave. (Smart move, since she’s convinced she would’ve blundered everything within five minutes.)

As she left, Owen and his daughters were just arriving, ready to carry the chess torch forward. Apparently, the smell of Triggerfish’s food was “dangerously enticing.” 🍔♟

Summary:
🍾 Excuses flowed, queens were trapped, and the cider was thoroughly tested.
Between champagne, Magic drafts, and “I swear I’m in Joburg” messages, Triggerfish Tuesday still pulled through — full of laughter, checkmates, and the smell of dangerously good food. 🍔♟️

We’re thrilled to be starting a new chapter at Triggerfish Brewing, where the tables are big, the drinks are cold, and the vibe is pure Helderberg Chess chaos. Here’s to many Tuesday nights of tricky moves, great company, and maybe a few accidental blunders. 🍺✨
