Where Chess Meets Fun: Highlights from the Holiday Workshop

On Thursday, 10 July, Helderberg Chess Club hosted a one-day Holiday Chess Workshop at Privé in Strand. Despite the winter chill outside, things were buzzing indoors with strategy, laughter, and lots of chess.

The event was split into two sessions:

  • Juniors (ages 7–10) took the spotlight in the early session
  • Seniors (ages 11+) and adults joined in the afternoon

Coach Armand led both groups, keeping players on their toes with fun lessons, smart tactics, and loads of energy.

Juniors Bring the Energy

The juniors kicked off the day with two hours of exciting mini-lessons and creative activities. They learned:

  • Two simple openings that work in almost every game
  • Three sneaky tricks to win material fast
  • Funny real-life checkmates that had everyone giggling

The session ended with a surprise colouring challenge called Design Mr Rook’s Castle. This hands-on activity let kids get creative while thinking about the game in a whole new way. Each child also received take-home puzzles and games to keep practising during the school holidays.

Seniors Step Up Their Game

In the afternoon, the older group dug into more advanced topics like:

  • Choosing the right opening based on your own playing style
  • Avoiding classic blunders and missed tactics
  • How to hold your nerve and convert a strong position into a win
  • Staying motivated and loving the game—even after a tough loss

To wrap things up, seniors competed in a chess trivia quiz packed with questions about tactics, history, and famous games. It was close, but one player stood out with some sharp answers and quick thinking.

A Great Day, Great Venue, and Great Food

Privé once again provided the perfect space to host the event. Big thanks to everyone who supported the venue by grabbing a meal or a drink during the day. The food was excellent and the atmosphere kept the event feeling relaxed and friendly.

What Made This Workshop Special?

  • Kids and teens learned valuable skills in a fun, pressure-free setting
  • The mix of play, learning, and creativity kept everyone engaged
  • Coach Armand’s energy made sure no one got bored, no matter their level
  • And most importantly, the day was a reminder that chess can be serious and fun at the same time

We loved seeing so many familiar faces and welcoming some new ones too. Whether you came to learn, laugh, or simply enjoy a good game, you helped make this workshop a success.
