Triggerfish Tuesday #3 – Clever People, Goalkeepers & the Customary Sven Beating
Triggerfish was buzzing this week — and not just from the beer. The Mensa Society had shown up for their boardgame night, quickly earning the nickname “the clever people.” According to staff, chess players also count as clever… but the Mensa crew are “the originals.” We’ll graciously settle for runner-up geniuses. 🧠
Daniel immediately recognized one of the clever people — Tiaan, his fellow hockey goalkeeper from school. Because apparently standing in front of fast-flying objects counts as intellectual training. 🥅 Turns out Tian’s still got great reflexes — just redirected to the chessboard. He and Naomi split their two games 1–1, setting the stage for next month’s Best of Three Showdown: The Goalkeepers’ Gambit. ♟️
Dennis and his “little brother” arrived bright and early, already in full attack mode. Clive joined soon after, calm as ever, playing chess so solid it could’ve been used as a building foundation.
Charlie, meanwhile, took a well-earned smoke break after a few tough games against Sven — and somehow convinced his opponent to move the whole match outside. That’s right — outdoor chess is officially a thing now. 🚬♟️
Sven, of course, was delighted to find “fresh blood” in the new Tian… and promptly gave him the customary Sven beating™ — Triggerfish’s most reliable weekly tradition. 💀
Alex, ever the polite assassin, destroyed almost everyone he played, explaining every move afterward with the calm precision of a forensic scientist. (“See here, this is where your entire position died.”) 🧐
Meanwhile, the pizza was divine, the beer dangerously smooth, and Morne couldn’t stop grinning about “the new vibe” while sipping a coffee. And honestly, who can blame him? Great food, cold (and hot) drinks, and chaos that counts as brain exercise — what’s not to love? 🍕🍺♟️
