Holiday Chess Club – Somerset West Library Edition

Friday, 10 October was one for the books! Our one-day Holiday Chess Club returned — this time at the Somerset West Library — and what a fantastic turnout we had. Close to 30 eager chess enthusiasts joined us for a morning filled with fun, learning, and a touch of friendly competition.

🎨 Morning Session – Beginners

The first session saw our younger group diving into the world of chess with laughter and excitement. Between mini-games, puzzles, and lessons on the basic principles of play, the beginners also got to show off their creative side in a chess-themed colouring competition.
Congratulations to Elbé Klopper, who impressed everyone with her vibrant and detailed artwork!

🧠 Late Morning Session – Advanced Players

The older players and more experienced juniors took things up a notch in the advanced session, where Coach Armand Etsebeth led a challenging and engaging lesson series. Players tackled a tough chess quiz that tested everything from tactics to endgames — and Alyssa Bolton came out on top with the most correct answers!

🤍 The Spirit of Chess

Throughout both sessions, the energy in the library was contagious. It was a perfect blend of education and enjoyment, showing exactly what chess should be about.

A massive thank you to Coach Armand Etsebeth for his fantastic lessons, and to everyone who joined us to make the day such a success.
