Helderberg Chess Club Brings the Game to the People – A Friendly Day at Triggerfish Market

Sunday’s Friendly Rapid Chess Mini-Tournament at Triggerfish Market was another success, blending chess, community, and the vibrant atmosphere of the market. Between the live music, food stalls, and chatter, the click of clocks and the tension over the boards added a new kind of rhythm to the day.

The morning started with the Beginners section – new players, young talents, and a few nervous smiles as the first clocks started ticking. The Intermediate section followed with tighter, more tactical games, and by afternoon, the Advanced players were locked in focused battles.

The wind picked up as the day went on, and after a few pieces blew off the board, everyone moved indoors for the final two rounds of the advanced section.

🌟 A Growing Chess Community

With over 30 players competing across the three sections – Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced – Triggerfish Market once again turned into a hive of chess activity. Some players even doubled up and joined multiple sections, keeping the boards busy from morning to afternoon. Meanwhile, casual visitors joined in, turning the market into a relaxed, social chess hub for the day.

The friendly, unrated format encouraged participation from all levels — from first-time competitors to experienced players brushing off their rapid instincts. This mix of structure and spontaneity — serious games beside laughter and market chatter — is what makes these events so unique. Chess isn’t just a competition here; it’s a shared experience.

💛 Thank You

A huge thank-you to Triggerfish Market for hosting, to every player who joined in, and to the Helderberg Chess Club volunteers who made the day run smoothly.

All proceeds from the event go toward supporting the Helderberg Chess Club, helping to grow local chess and create more opportunities for community play.
